Pursuant to the Government’s thrust towards Universal Health Care (UHC) and in light of the major changes in the pharmaceutical landscape, the Department of Health, through the Pharmaceutical Division (PD), is currently crafting the new medium-term Philippine Medicines Policy (PMP) to be implemented from the years 2022 to 2030. The new policy will use the ACCESS framework with six (6) key pillars, namely: (i) Assurance of safety, efficacy, and quality; (ii) Collaboration on availability and affordability; (iii) Commitment to the rational use of medicines; (iv) Effective networking, partnerships and good governance in medicines; (v) Sustainable financing for medicines; and, (vi) Strengthening health systems. Its acronym is a call to the government to fulfill its obligation to protect public health by ensuring sustainable access to essential medicines while fortifying domestic capacity to meet the local demands for medicines.
